I have a like/dislike relationship with the John Mayer song Daughters. On the one hand, I like the tune, and I like acoustic pieces like that. But I find some of the lyrics kind of inspid. First up:
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
Ok, this bugs me in two ways: one, it's that assumption that all women want and will become mothers. But that's a minor point. Artistic license. It's the "turn into" that gets me--it implies that one cannot be both a lover and a mother. As soon as you're a mommy, nope, no more being a lover for you! It's Mommy time! Mommies aren't sexy.
But it's a different verse that I really dislike:
Boys, you can break
You'll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without the warmth from
A woman's good, good heart
You'll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without the warmth from
A woman's good, good heart
At first I thought he was trying to be ironic or something, but I think he's serious. "Boys you can break"? "Boys solider on"? What is up with that? And give me a break with the "boys would be gone" without "a woman's good good heart". Plays into that whole stereotype about how women are so good and they rescue those poor uncultured men.
Hmmf.
