Last Monday saw Jill Sobule perform in San Francisco at Cafe Du Nord. (Even if you don't recognize the name, you've probably heard her song I Kissed a Girl.) I had thought she would be playing there while we were in England, but on a whim I checked her website that Monday and discovered it was actually that night.

It was a nice small club and we had seats at a table near the stage. Jill performed by herself with just her acoustic guitar and put on a great show. She was funny and chatty and interacted with the crowd. During one song she had someone hold up her cell phone while she called her mom in Denver and did a duet called Big Shoes, about the orthopedic shoes she had to wear as a kid.

Afterwards I bought a CD, which she signed. My first celebrity meeting!

A year or so ago, I managed to attend a "living room party" hosted be a friend who would book acts that were in town playing 'real' gigs to play acoustic sets at his house. The one party he'd snagged Jill Sobule and John Doe (formerly of X), they took turns playing musical word-association, each playing a tune that somehow related to the other's previous tune (unrehearsed). I'd not heard JS or JD before and was really blown away by both of 'em.
