I can't believe the Bush administration is objecting to the .xxx domain name suffix, on the grounds it "legitimizes" pornography. You've got to be kidding me. Do they really think this will increase the amount of porn on the Internet? "But what about the children!" I guess it's like the arguments against teaching kids how to prevent pregnancy and STDs; gee, if we show them what a condom is, they'll start having sex! I know, let's stick our heads in the sand and pretend pre-martial sex doesn't actually exist. Anyway, this newest protest outrages me on many levels:
  • It's not like it's particularly difficult to find pornography on the Internet right now. This won't make it any easier.
  • Where does the Bush administration get off dictating what can and can't be done on the Internet? Last time I checked, the internets were in fact available all around the world.
  • Most importantly, this will actually help block porn sites where desired, for example on your family computer or at the library. It's very difficult right now to do a good job of blocking porn sites; you invariably let a lot of stuff through that you shouldn't, and block things like breast cancer research sites. This would make it simple: just block all .xxx domains. Granted, not all porn sites will choose to use this extension, but it'll help.
