Last night we went to see the Barenaked Ladies (again). They are touring this summer with Alanis Morissette. They put on a great show as usual.
I liked Alanis's first album a lot, but I haven't kept up with her since then so I wasn't sure what to expect. She sang very well and ran around the stage a lot but I couldn't help feeling like I was watching the whole thing on MTV. We had lawn seats and couldn't really see the stage, so we watched most of it on the large screen. I just didn't feel involved in the show the way I do when BNL performs. She came out to sing Call and Answer with them and it was so bizarre to hear one of my favorite songs sung by someone with a different but familiar voice.
She sang a lot of songs from her first album, Jagged Little Pill. I can remember listening to the song You Oughta Know driving on the 52 on the way to work in San Diego. I remember singing it while walking down the street in Bloomington, Indiana on the way to a Chinese food restaurant where they served tortillas for the mu shoo pancakes. (The horror!)
Albums I listened to a lot my first year in Indiana: Alanis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill; Jewel, Pieces of You; Jill Sobule, Jill Sobule. The only one I still listen to regularly is Jill Sobule.
Albums I listened to a lot my second year in Indiana: Barenaked Ladies, Barenaked Ladies, and, oh yes, Barenaked Ladies. Also, Dar Williams's The Honesty Room.
Listening to Alanis sing all those songs from her first album last night really brought back memories.
