I'm officially unemployed.

Yesterday was my last day at Nuance. After nearly 8 years there, I decided it was time to move on to the next thing.

I haven't decided yet what that will be--not sure if I'll stay in the speech recognition business or not. I'm going to take a little time off and see what's out there.

Last fall, we decided the toilet seat in our bathroom needed replacing. Easy, right? The first task was to remove the existing seat, which took a surprising amount of effort because the bolts were difficult to remove. After several trips to Home Depot to buy/return various toilet seats that wouldn't fit, we finally discovered the problem: our toilet doesn't have a normal attached seat where you can access the bolt. No, the bolt goes into the toilet itself. Which means, of course, you must buy a specialty part, not available in any store known to man.

Chris eventually called Kohler to order the missing piece (called an "anchor kit"--see drawing. Do you think that's really worth $30?) and was told it would take up to 70 days to receive the part. 70 days came and went, and when he called to find out the status, he was told that all of the parts ordered from overseas has been in a container on a cargo ship, and the container fell off and was no doubt at the bottom of the ocean now.

Nice.

I called them to see if I could get any more information and was told "Oh yes, it will be shipped to you next week, no problem." Likely story. After nothing happened, I called again and was told there was no estimated date as they looked for a new vendor. One who presumably didn't lose shipping containers in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I resigned myself to another infinite wait, and was shocked last week when the parts finally showed up. Chris installed them, and finally, after 6 months, I have a non-wobbly toilet seat. It's the little things in life...
